Mom Burnout and the Mental Load: How Acupuncture Can Help

Raise your hand if your brain has 47 tabs open right now.

Picture day forms. The dentist appointment. What’s for dinner, whether anyone has clean socks, and the birthday gift for a party on Saturday. Even when you’re “resting,” part of you is still running the household in the background.

That background hum has a name: the mental load. And if it’s leaving you exhausted, short-tempered, or lying awake at 2 a.m. making lists, you are far from alone. Let’s talk about what’s really going on with mom burnout, what the research says, and how acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help you feel like yourself again.

What is the mental load?

The mental load is the invisible work of keeping a family running: noticing, planning, remembering, and anticipating. It’s not just doing the laundry. It’s knowing the laundry needs doing, that the soccer uniform has to be clean by Thursday, and that you’re almost out of detergent.

A 2019 study in Sex Roles surveyed 393 partnered mothers. Almost 9 in 10 said they were solely responsible for organizing family schedules, and about two-thirds said they were the main one tending to their kids’ emotional needs. That last piece, the quiet work of looking after everyone’s well-being, was the strongest predictor of distress, including feelings of emptiness and lower life satisfaction.

Read that again: the work nobody sees is the work that weighs the most.

Is mom burnout a real thing?

Yes. And it’s common.

In 2024, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory calling parental stress an urgent public health issue. According to the advisory, 48% of parents say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming, compared with 26% of other adults.

An Ohio State University report found that 66% of working parents surveyed met the criteria for parental burnout, and being female was one of the factors most strongly tied to it. Burnout was linked to depression, anxiety, and drinking more.

So if you’ve been wondering whether you’re just “bad at handling it,” please hear us: this is a widespread, well-documented problem. Not a personal failing.

What are the signs of mom burnout?

Burnout tends to creep in quietly. A few common signs:

  • Feeling tired no matter how much you sleep (or not sleeping well at all)
  • A shorter fuse than usual with your kids or partner
  • Feeling emotionally distant, or like you’re on autopilot
  • Tension headaches, tight shoulders, or a clenched jaw
  • Digestion changes, cravings, or skipping meals
  • Cycle changes, rougher PMS, or a lower libido
  • Losing interest in the things that used to feel like yours

If any of these feel heavy or won’t let up, or you’re feeling hopeless, please reach out to your doctor or a mental health professional. You deserve real support.

How does Chinese medicine look at stress?

Fun fact: Shen is the Chinese medicine word for spirit, or mind. When your Shen is settled, you sleep well, think clearly, and feel like yourself. When it’s unsettled, you feel scattered, anxious, and wired but tired. Sound familiar?

Here are the patterns we see most often in stressed-out moms:

  • Liver Qi stagnation, the “pressure cooker” pattern: irritability, lots of sighing, tight neck and shoulders, PMS, and a feeling of being stuck
  • Spleen Qi deficiency, the “running on empty” pattern: worry and overthinking, fatigue, brain fog, and digestion that’s a little off
  • Heart and Spleen deficiency, the “can’t shut my brain off” pattern: restless sleep, waking in the night, and racing thoughts

Most of us are a mix. That’s why we look at your whole picture instead of handing you a one-size-fits-all fix.

Can acupuncture help with stress and anxiety?

You know we love a good study. Here’s where the research stands, honest caveats included:

  • Anxiety. A 2025 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Neurology pooled 14 randomized trials (968 people) comparing real acupuncture with sham acupuncture. Real acupuncture led to modestly lower anxiety scores and better sleep quality, and in a smaller group of trials, lower levels of the stress hormones cortisol and ACTH. The authors rated much of the evidence as low certainty, so bigger and better trials are still needed.
  • Sleep. A 2022 randomized trial in JAMA Network Open followed 247 adults with depression and insomnia. Those who added electroacupuncture (gentle electrical stimulation on the needles) three times a week for eight weeks saw bigger improvements in sleep quality than those who got sham acupuncture or usual care alone, and the benefit held through the end of the study.
  • Burnout. A small 2021 trial in health care workers found that ear acupressure (tiny seeds taped to points on the ear) was linked to lower burnout scores after three weeks. A small study, but an interesting signal.

Our take: acupuncture isn’t a magic off switch for stress, and it doesn’t replace therapy, medication, or real help at home. What it can offer is a calmer nervous system, better sleep, and an hour where nobody needs anything from you. For a lot of moms, that last part alone is huge.
