The Five Quick Health Fixes for Feeling Emo (yes I used a Twilight snap, you’re welcome)
Ok it’s no surprise that everyone is feeling a little blue this time of year. Sadly there’s even an equation for this syndrome called “Blue Monday” which adds together the time since the holidays, credit card debt, the weather and a bunch of other factors to conclude: the third week in January blows. Thanks science!
Ok here are 5 quick tips to help you feel better almost instantly:
-
Exercise: I know this is hard, I get it. But getting your butt in the gym, to yoga, to barre or wherever you sweat best releases endorphins, gets the blood pumping and immediately improves mood and confidence. Can’t manage to leave the house? I have a fix for that too; dailyburn.com is a total personal trainer that downloads to your phone, TV or laptop so you can do workouts right in your living room. Try it free for 30 days and if you wanna seriously get all about that bass, do the Butt, Thighs, Hips workout. You’ll be a Kardashian by the weekend #swoll

Get into Nature: Remember that thing that’s like green and then there’s some blue wet stuff and brown kinda dirt smelling stuff too? Yah that’s Earth. We are earthlings and living in the concrete jungle taxes our nervous systems creating stress and tension. The Negative ions found in nature are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy. Negative stuff that is Positive… who knew?

Know your Khavaigunya: WHAAAA? Your Khavaigunya is an Ayurvedic term that means the place in your body that is the weakest, that is essentially your achilles heel. For example, when some people get stressed they immediately get neck pain. Some people get migraines, back pain, allergies, anxiety or emotional. Get in touch with your body, identify what the first place is that goes out of whack and then make sure you are nurturing that. Get a massage, get Acupuncture (shameless self plug ;-)) or take yourself to a clean eating restaurant and fill up on goodness to ground and nourish yourself. Take proactive steps to nurture yourself before your Khavaigunya kicks your ass.

Surround yourself with AGGRESSIVE Positivity: Think Richard Simmons. On Bullet-Proof Coffee. And a truck full of puppies. Yes, that kind of aggressive positivity will help propel you through Blue Monday and any bout of moody emo-ness. The first thing you need to do when you get up in the morning is put on the happiest song you have while you brush your teeth. Then on your way to work actually practice random smiling while you note 5 things in your life you are truly thankful for. Youtube motivational vids. Call and meet up with positive people in your life and respectfully avoid people and situations that bring you down (it’s ok to say No)

Eat light, fresh and clean: Its a scientific fact that sugar, processed foods, dairy and alcohol mess with our moods. Books like “Wheat Belly”, “The Happiness Diet” and “The Ultramind Solution” outline how what we put in our body directly impact our state of mind and well being. The less of the crap you shove in your mouth the less of the crap comes out of it (whining, complaining, negativity, sadness). Try these Super Foods for a boost: Swiss Chard, Lemon, Kale, Blue Potatoes, Tomatoes, Oysters and Cherries.
