Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is a relaxing and gentle treatment. The needles are very fine, and many people feel little to no sensation when they are inserted. You may experience a mild, calming sensation as your body responds to the treatment, which is a sign that the acupuncture is working. Our goal is to ensure your comfort throughout the entire session, allowing you to fully relax and benefit from the healing process.
What should I expect during my initial appointment?
During your first visit to Shen Medicine, you can expect a comprehensive consultation and a thorough assessment of your medical history. Your acupuncturist will work closely with you to establish the most effective treatment strategy tailored to your needs. Your initial appointment will last 85 minutes and will include a detailed intake process, acupuncture while you relax on a far infrared Biomat, and a clear, actionable treatment plan.
How long is an appointment?
An initial acupuncture appointment lasts 85 minutes, allowing ample time for assessment and treatment. Follow-up acupuncture appointments are 55 minutes.
How often will I need to come in for acupuncture before I see results?
Your practitioner will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs, and results can vary. Many patients experience immediate relief, while others may need more time to address underlying issues.
Should I eat before my appointment?
Yes, we recommend eating a balanced meal at least two hours before your appointment.
What should I wear to my appointment?
For acupuncture, we recommend wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows access to your lower legs, arms, and abdomen. For massage, you’ll be undressed to your comfort level and fully draped during the session.
Do you offer acupuncture for fertility support?
Yes, we specialize in fertility-focused acupuncture. Whether you’re just beginning your journey, working with a fertility clinic, or trying to conceive naturally, acupuncture can support your hormones, reduce stress, and optimize cycle health. We’ll work closely with you to create a personalized plan based on where you are in the process.
Can I come in for acupuncture at any point in my menstrual cycle?
Yes! Acupuncture can be beneficial during all phases of your cycle. In fact, treatment is tailored based on where you are in your cycle to best support hormone balance, blood flow, and overall reproductive health. If you’re unsure of timing, don’t worry—we’ll guide you through it.
Massage Therapy
What types of massage do you offer?
We offer two types of massage: Intuitive Massage (non-natal) and Prenatal Massage (pregnancy), both available in 55-minute and 85-minute sessions.
Is prenatal massage safe for all stages of pregnancy?
Yes, our prenatal massages are safe and thoughtfully tailored to support each stage of pregnancy. However, if you’re in your first trimester, we recommend checking with your OBGYN or care provider for clearance before booking your session. Let us know how far along you are so we can ensure the most supportive experience possible.
What should I expect during a massage session?
Your massage therapist will begin with a brief consultation to understand your goals and areas of tension. You’ll remain draped comfortably throughout the session, and your therapist will adjust pressure and techniques to your comfort level.
Can I receive massage and acupuncture during the same visit?
Absolutely! You can book both services on the same day, either back-to-back or in a combined session if available. Let us know your preferences, and we’ll help you schedule accordingly.
